2024 Subaru Legacy vs. 2024 Toyota Camry: Which Sedan Is Right for You?

September 14th, 2023 by

Two of the more popular sedans on the market today are the 2024 Subaru Legacy and the 2024 Toyota Camry, and for good reason. Both sedans have much to offer, such as fuel efficiency, interior space, and driving performance, but one is likely a better fit for you than the other. Below, we’ll highlight some key differences between the Legacy and the Camry to help you decide between these two great sedans.

Which Is Better: The 2024 Subaru Legacy or the 2024 Toyota Camry?

To determine which is better, the Legacy or the Camry, we’ll compare them in a few key areas.

Which Has Better Performance?

Both the 2024 Subaru Legacy and the 2024 Toyota Camry deliver excellent performance. The standard engine on the Legacy is a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder that produces 182 horsepower. The higher-level trims are upgraded to a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, producing 260 horsepower. Regardless of which engine you select, it will pair with a continuously variable transmission and all-wheel drive to deliver smooth performance and reliable handling. Finally, at its best, the Subaru Legacy can go from zero to 60 in just 6.1 seconds.

As with the Legacy, the Toyota Camry has a few engine options. The base version comes with a four-cylinder setup that delivers 203 horsepower and pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The other gas engine available for the Camry is a 3.5-liter V-6 model that produces 301 horsepower. Besides this, a hybrid powertrain is available, which combines a 2.5-liter engine with an electric motor to deliver 208 horsepower.

As you can see, both models offer similar performance specs. However, if you want the most horsepower in your sedan, the Toyota Camry has a slight edge.

Which Gets Better Gas Mileage?

Which vehicle gets better gas mileage will depend on the powertrain you select in your model. With the Subaru Legacy, you’ll get around 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway with the standard base model. Upgrading to the turbocharged engine doesn’t change these estimates too much, dropping slightly to 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.

The gas-powered Camry offers similar efficiency. The LE and SE models with the four-cylinder engine deliver 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway, while the models with the V-6 engine deliver 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Therefore, with their most powerful setups, the Legacy is more fuel-efficient for city driving and less efficient on the highway.

If you want the best fuel efficiency, you’ll find it in the Toyota Camry Hybrid. Thanks to their reliance on an electric motor, hybrid models are rated at 51 mpg in the city and 53 mpg on the highway. However, hybrid models are typically much more expensive than gas-powered ones, so you’ll have to decide if the improved fuel efficiency is worth the extra upfront cost.

Which Has More Space?

On the inside, the 2024 Subaru Legacy offers a slightly larger cabin. The front and rear seats offer additional headroom and legroom, helping even taller passengers feel more comfortable. The entire cabin feels more spacious in the Legacy, thanks to the 120.6 cubic feet of interior volume compared to 115.5 cubic feet inside the Toyota Camry.

In terms of cargo space, the 2024 Subaru Legacy and the 2024 Toyota Camry are virtually the same. They both offer about 15 cubic feet of space in the trunk, which is typically enough for the average user to fit a few suitcases or grocery bags easily.

Which One Has Better Entertainment Technology?

On the base model of the 2024 Legacy, Subaru’s STARLINK infotainment system uses dual 7-inch displays. However, if you upgrade to any other trim, this screen becomes the company’s latest 11.6-inch vertically oriented model. Both versions come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can easily integrate your phone into your driving experience. Other features include in-dash navigation and a premium 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

Contrast this with the 2024 Camry, in which all models feature a 9-inch touch-screen infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard, but you’ll likely have to upgrade to the enhanced version to get the most features out of the Camry’s entertainment system.

Which Has More Safety Features?

If you’re looking for a vehicle with plenty of safety features, you can’t go wrong with the Subaru Legacy or the Toyota Camry. Both manufacturers include a standard range of driver-assistance features, so you’ll get them no matter which trim you select. Some of these features include:

  • Automatic emergency braking.
  • Lane departure warning.
  • Lane-keep assist.
  • Adaptive cruise control.
  • Forward collision warning.

Which One Is More Reliable?

Finally, there’s the reliability factor. With plenty of safety features onboard both vehicles, you can feel secure while driving either model. In addition, both cars have all-wheel drive, giving you more control when driving on rugged terrain or in bad weather.

If you want more protection, the Subaru Legacy has excellent warranties. Its limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles, and its powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles. These warranties should give you more peace of mind, knowing that the most critical parts of your Subaru are protected for the first few years of ownership.
