The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek family includes five trim levels: the Base 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited, and Hybrid. Subaru provides three different powertrain options for the 2022 Crosstrek family. The base and Premium trims both feature the standard engine, which is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that provides 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain is paired with a manual transmission in the standard configuration, although an automatic option is also available.

The Sport and Limited trims get an upgrade in the form of a 2.5-liter engine that kicks out 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. This is paired with an automatic transmission, and the Limited trim adds paddle shifters. The final option is the plug-in hybrid drivetrain. This configuration pairs a 2.0-liter engine with an electric motor for a combined 148 horsepower. When fully charged, the electric motor provides 17 miles of all-electric range. With a standard 120-watt outlet, the Crosstrek Hybrid can charge in approximately five hours, while a 240-volt outlet can shorten the charging time to two hours.

The Crosstrek’s low center of gravity and wide stance give it great stability and easy handling on winding roads. One of the best features of the Crosstrek is that it sports standard all-wheel drive at every trim level. This feature is rare in the subcompact SUV category, and it truly sets the Crosstrek apart from its peers.

Fuel Efficiency

The Crosstrek’s incredible fuel efficiency is probably one of this little SUV’s best features. It’s consistently rated one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class, which is important with gas prices on the rise. The 2.0-liter engine and manual transmission achieve 22 MPG for city driving and 29 MPG on the highway, while the same engine with the automatic transmission is rated at 28 and 33, respectively.

A further boost is provided by the 2.5-liter engine, which is rated at 27 MPG and 34 MPG, respectively. Finally, the hybrid model is rated at 35 MPG for highway driving and up to 90 MPGe combined.

Interior

Like its fellow Subarus, the Crosstrek features a comfortable but simple interior that projects function. The interior is available in black or light gray, and higher trims have leather upholstery. Trim levels from the Premium up also have access to heated front seats, and the Limited trim features a three-way power adjustable driver’s seat. Yellow and orange stitching liven up the interior of the Sport and Limited trims.

If you plan to take your Crosstrek into the mountains or on a road trip, cargo space might be an important consideration. With the rear seats in the upright position, the Crosstrek has 20.8 cubic feet of cargo room. Drivers can expand this to 55.3 cubic feet by folding these seats down.

Each Crosstrek features a StarLink infotainment system, Apple CarPlay connectivity, and Android Auto connectivity. In the Base, Premium, and Sport trims, the system is controlled from a 6.5-inch touchscreen. The Limited and Hybrid models sport a larger eight-inch touchscreen with available navigation and SiriusXM.

Safety

The Crosstrek has received excellent safety ratings, including a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Sport, Limited, and Hybrid trims include the EyeSight suite of features, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, and lane-keep assist. The Limited trim adds rear cross-traffic monitoring and blind-spot monitoring. Although not standard, these features are available at every trim level for a modest price increase.
