Preparing Your Subaru for a Road Trip

October 27th, 2022 by

Subaru vehicles are perfect for drivers who enjoy road trips or vacations. Properly preparing for a road trip ensures more time for enjoyment and fewer hassles. Here’s a checklist to help you get ready.

Complete a Pre-Trip Check

Ensuring your vehicle is in good order is crucial for safety and preventing trip disruptions. Here’s a basic vehicle checklist for every adventurous driver:

Step One: Check Your Fluids

Apart from gasoline, there are six essential fluids to check:

  1. Engine Oil: Change frequency varies by type:
    • Natural: every 5,000 miles
    • Synthetic blend: every 7,500 miles
    • Fully synthetic: every 15,000 miles
    • Check the oil level and color.
  2. Coolant: Change after 60,000 miles initially, then every 30,000 miles.
  3. Power Steering Fluid: Replace every 40,000 to 80,000 miles. Have a certified mechanic handle this.
  4. Brake Fluid: Replace every 2 years or 30,000 miles.
  5. Transmission Fluid: Follow your owner’s manual for specific intervals.
  6. Windshield Wiper Fluid: Replace every 6 months to a year or after 3 to 6 top-offs.

Step Two: Check Your Tires, Brake Pads, and Rotors

  • Tires:
    • Inspect for bubbles, cracks, bulges, or discoloration. Replace if necessary.
    • Check tread depth with a Lincoln penny; replace if it doesn’t cover Lincoln’s head.
    • Replace tires every 6 years (5 years for SUVs, 3-6 years for trucks).
  • Brake Pads: Replace every 10,000 to 20,000 miles. Replace immediately if you hear squealing or clicking.
  • Rotors: Replace every 50,000 to 70,000 miles. Watch for pulsing brake pedals, grinding sounds, and steering wheel vibrations. Service immediately if a rotor is cracked.

Step Three: Organize, Check Interior Systems, and Clean

  • Pack Smart: Include a jack, spare tire, flares, extra fluids, flashlights, emergency communication, and a medical kit. Organize items for easy access.
  • Check Interior Systems:
    • Ensure the infotainment system, heating, air conditioning, and powered mirrors work properly.
  • Clean Thoroughly:
    • Clean the interior and exterior, especially the windshield and windows, to avoid blind spots.
    • Ensure the driver’s floorboard is free from loose items.
